Why Do I Need Insurance On My Mobility Scooter?
Mobility scooters can significantly enhance your quality of life – giving independence and accessibility. Their use helps thousands of people everyday carry on with everyday tasks. With the ability to use mobility scooters on pedestrian streets and roads, their level of risk increases.
Even the most careful driver can find themselves in an accident or have their scooter damaged in some form. That’s why it is ever so important to ensure that you are covered by a mobility scooter insurance policy.
What are the different types of Mobility Scooters?
Before taking out an insurance policy, it’s important to understand the different types of Mobility Scooters.
Class 2 scooters – Only for use on pavements (except where there isn’t pavement) and have a maximum speed of 4mph. You do not need to register your scooter with DVLA.
Class 3 scooters – Have to be registered with the DVLA and have a maximum weight of 150kg. They can be taken on the road with a speed limit of 8 miles per hour, but when on pavements, must be driven at 4 miles per hour. You are expected to obey all regulations as other road users. If you are taking your class 3 mobility scooter on the road, you must have an efficient braking system, indicators, rear view mirror, audible horn, front and rear lights.
Scooter Insurance is not a legal requirement, so why should I bother?
As it stands, owners of mobility scooters have no legal obligation to have insurance, but what happens if you have an accident or you wake up to find the scooter has been stolen? In 2017, it was reported by The Department for Transport that the number of accidents involving mobility scooters was on the rise with over 61 serious accidents reported for that year.
There are many reasons why it is a wise decision to take out insurance; for example, if you break down and find yourself stranded, the cover can help get you and your equipment safety home. With 24/7 national breakdown cover, you will always be in safe hands when these types of situations occur.
In worst case scenarios, such as your equipment being stolen, or even vandalised, the insurance can cover the cost of replacing or repairing the scooter. Let’s not forget that your insurance policy will include public liability – if you have an incident that results in causing an injury to a pedestrian, you could be protected from compensation claims.
Insurance not only offers you peace of mind but can also save you from paying out large sums of money. Having invested in a Mobility scooter, it is essential to protect that investment, to maintain that independence and quality of life that your scooter provides you.
