Spina Bifida Awareness Week In October
Shine, formed in 1966, is a charity that was initially created to provide support to individuals and families affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus. This incredible charity is launching Spina Bifida Awareness Week on Friday 25th October 2019!
To drum up awareness, Shine’s new fundraising event is cleverly coined with the slogan ‘bring the “Back to the Front” of people’s minds’. They are running this alongside the hashtag #BackToFront. The week will be full of opportunities for you to get involved, help spread the word, and generate further recognition of this particular birth defect.
What Is Spina Bifida?
Spina Bifida is the maldevelopment of a baby’s spine and spinal cord while in the womb, which creates a gap in their spine. The neural tube is what becomes our brain and spine. Spinal Bifida is a neural tube defect (NTD), and it occurs when the tube does not develop or close properly.
Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a specific cause for Spina Bifida. However, scientific studies suggest that a lack of folic acid both before and during early pregnancy is a significant hazard.
Vitamin B is a fantastic supplement for reducing this risk. Other countries have taken the step to add folic acid to white flour, and this has been proven to effectively reduce the number of common birth defects that occur during pregnancy. Britain is yet to take the leap.
How Can I Support The Charity?
Shine’s concept is to encourage supporters to ‘make a pledge’ to tell people what it’s like to live with the condition. The ‘Back To Front’ event will, in turn, encourage the supporters to think up clever ways to bring the back to the front of people’s minds in schools, workplaces, town centres, and wherever else support gathers.
Fundraising at work and getting your colleagues to wear their clothes back to front is an immediate and entertaining way to get involved, for example.
As well as the hope for further exposure to the defect, Shine will continue their quest to support those affected by Spina Bifida. As such, all the proceeds will be donated to the people who need it.
Improving The Lives Of Spina Bifida Sufferers
We have often discussed the physical and cognitive benefits of such devices as the EasyStand for increasing the health of people who require assistance to reach a standing position. Spina Bifida sufferers are among those who would profit greatly from such a device.
The Spina Bifida Awareness Week, however, will generate a huge amount of emotional, mental, and financial support to the families and individuals affected. This is a fantastic and incredibly important event which we at The Mobility Aids Centre hold close to our hearts. The well-being of our customers is at the forefront of our priorities as a business.
Our catalogue of products has been designed to match the requirements of all our visitors. If there is a way in which we could help you better over the phone, don’t hesitate to give us a call on 01733 342242!
